Charlottesville, VA


RESTAURANTS
  • Duner's - One of Charlottesville's best! No reservations allowed, but the wait is worth it!
  • Ivy Inn - tucked away from campus, this is a great spot for dinner. Reservations required.
  • Boar's Head Inn - great lodge and dining just a bit outside of town.
  • Michie Tavern - old historic spot from the Jefferson era.
  • Crozet Pizza - worth the drive through the Virginia countryside.
  • Big Jim's BBQ - great local BBQ spot!
  • Northern Exposure - seating on the top deck is great during the spring or fall
  • Casella's - close to the John Paul Jones arena. What this spot lack's in curbside appeal it makes up for it with great Italian food.
  • Vivace - Fantastic environment, especially the outdoor seating. Italian food.
  • Guadalajara - good cheap Mexican food - several locations.

MARKETS

  • Bell Air - Don't let the gas station fool you, just grab sandwiches to go. The Farmington is one of their best!
  • Hotcakes - another great spot to grab food for wine country/picnics.

THE CORNER

  • Michael's Bistro - get a spot on the deck overlooking the Corner. Outstanding beer selection.
  • The White Spot - Order a Gusburger. A favorite "late-nite" eating spot for students.
  • Little John's - open 24 hours. Good sandwiches.
  • Biltmore - great outdoor seating for dinner or drinks.
  • Coupe de Ville's - outdoor seating is great, but can get crowded. Locals play acoustic here.
  • St. Maarten's - check out the local mug collection
  • The Virginian - small, quaint spot for a drink or food.
  • Baja Bean - known more for their drinks then Mexican food.
  • Bodo's Bagels - an institution in Charlottesville. Plan on waiting in line, but it will move quickly.

  • Greenberry's Cofee - local shop with locations on grounds and off.

  • Boar's Head Inn - one of the best hotels in the area.

Balboa Cafe - Scrambled eggs are to die for, the bloody Mary’s are the best in town - 3199 Fillmore Street / Opens @ 11am $$

The Bagelry - New Yorker’s choose another form of breakfast food. All others this is the best place in town 2139 Polk St $

The Grove Cafe - one on Fillmore St. one on Chestnut St. (Marina District). Great coffee shop, serving fresh orange juice, draft beer. You'll see many locals here taking advantage of wireless access.

The Crepe House - Another favorite of ours! 1755 Polk St $ Cash only.

Squat and Gobble - great breakfast spot in famous Haight/Ashbury District. These are recently popping up all over town.

Moose's - great Sunday brunch, reservations required

Left at Albuquerque - crowded spot on Union Street with ok food. Fun spot for drinks, larget groups.

Frascati - intimate spot, with a recent change in owndership

Le Colonial - trendy spot, also big for drinks

  • Lodging - Mt. Meru Gaming Lodge: a nice quaint spot in Arusha with animals literally outside your door. This is a good starting point for a safari trip. Count on a good breakfast and very hospitable staff.

Ngorogoro Crater Conservation Area
  • Lodging - Ngorogoro Sopa Lodge - this is an incredible overlook for the crater. The car ride there hits nearly every pothole in Tanzania, but once you are there this is a great place to relax. The pool is outstanding and the scenery from the lodge, rooms and pool area are as good as anywhere.

  • Ruca Malen - make a point to dine at this restaurant as well. The chef gave our bodega tour and they were booked all week for lunch
  • Lagarde - great local spot with many different varieties - young staff gave great local restaurant recs.
  • Achaval Ferrer - very high end bodega winning many awards. This is a joint venture between 2 business men and 1 grower.
  • Carmelo Patti - a charming tour given only by Mr. Patti in espanol. Well worth it, particulary his description of the cork's importance.
  • Carlos Pulenta /Vistalaba - a great scenic spot with a small lodging option. The caves below are really neat and this is an outstanding spot to stop for lunch.

  • Weinert -make sure to try the apple cider!
  • Carinae - French family with a cool story

  • Alta Vista - one of the larger producers in the area but well worth the tour.
  • Nieto Sentiner - possibly the best tasting ambiance we've come across. Excellent tour/guides.
  • Domain St. Diego - small family run outfit with not much production. Spend sime time to picnic here.
  • Taupas Distillery - only distillery in the area - try the caramel flavor!
  • Hacienda del Plata - make sure to eat lunch here!
  • The Vines of Menoza - located in Mendoza is a great spot for arranging tours and buying wine. It is very close to the Park Hyatt.
